Building an Organization -Early stages.
Very often, I find entrepreneurs being too focused on break through ideas and then spending a lot of time planning about financials. While I do agree that a great idea is important it is also important to execute on that vision. To do that it not adequate ,only to focus on the financials aspects. They need to think thru how to do a fool proof execution. What I see is many entrepreneurs over look many of the long term issues which can help them build an institution which executes on their vision.
Often at times, we see entrepreneurs who start the business for the sake of keeping themselves busy. Clearly, in the early stages entrepreneurs must be clear of the vision of his business and how they will differenciate themselves in the market place. It’s very critical to have entrepreneurs to have a clear vision on what they want to achieve and then start the planning process on how they will start executing on the same.
In the early stages of building an organization, it’s critical to think up of the start up team. It is critical that entrepreneurs sell their vision and get people who are committed to the vision so that they are all on the same page to deliver on that vision. At times, I also see that entrepreneurs try to do too many things themselves it’s not possible for any one person to be a expert in several areas. So its essential in the start up stage entrepreneurs should think about what are the skills required in the team and bring in people who have complimentary skills and then ensure that the whole team has all the complementary skills to deliver on the vision.
As long as they have a team that has complimentary skills, which is highly aligned the chances are that the team would be on a good wicket to deliver on their vision. Therefore, in the early stages entrepreneurs should not only focus on identifying a break through idea but also think on the compelling vision as well as organization and structure which will deliver on the vision. It’s critical to get a team which buys into the vision with the complimentary skills which can make the whole team a ‘Dream’ team.
In the next issue, I will talk about some of the key factors which impact organization development when a organization grows from a nascent stage to toddler.

Hi Krishna Kumar,
It was a pleasure going through your thoughts on the value of building an organization rather than setting up a company.
I have been an entrepreneur myself and would agree with you. Ideating that leads to a killer product/ service is just the first step to the arduous journey of creating an enterprise. What you need is a pool of similar minded and equally charged people. However, that is easier said than done. Discovering good people, convincing them of your vision and keep them convinced through thick or thin is a tricky business and not many people can do it very effectively.
If you look back and around, most successful companies – Apple, HP, Microsoft, HCL, Infosys – were started either by a group or a duo. While one guy was the aggression incarnate, he was responsible for shaking the angels to rain money and make presentations around the globe, the other guy was the people’s man, who was existing in the background, talking to people, bringing them onboard and ensuring that the people were charged and motivated enough to deliver at their best.
