Building a Product Team – how to build a specialized talent for the product company?

Mr. Vidyasagar (Sr. Director HR, EMC) started the session by thanking NASSCOM for giving him the opportunity to chair the session. While sharing his experience on the evolution of the Indian Software Product Industry, he reminded him of the times when he was at i-Flex – the early days of the Indian Software Product industry. He then introduced the eminent speakers. Highlighting the importance of the talent building, he listed 3 phases of the Software Product cycle.

According to him, the skill sets for the above-mentioned phases is quite different and unique.

Atul Jalan (CEO, Manthan Software): Although he needs no introduction, Atul is currently in his 4th venture and for him ‘entrepreneurship is the way of life’. While speaking on talent building, he highlighted the importance of ‘Moving up the value chain’. According to him, ‘pricing’ is no more the key advantage. He then mentioned about ‘theory of constants’ and finally touched upon the ‘value of innovation’ – product development success is disruptive.

According to him, quality of the talent available in India will continue to be the key enabler for the growth of the Indian Software Product success story. While speaking on the difference between the product and the services industry, he warned the entrepreneurs to give away the pervasive mindset of ‘moving up the management ladder is the only way to grow in the career’. Like other speakers, Atul also emphasize on the need to ‘understand the customer’, one of the critical components which determine the success of any Software Product company. Given the above distinctions of the Software Product industry, the strategy for talent building is different from the services business and requires a different mindset to recruit, train and retain the talent.

Rishi Das (Co-founder and CEO Careernet): Rishi started his session by categorizing the different kinds of companies in the Software Product space.

According to one of the surveys (done with around 400 senior professionals) done by Careernet, ‘Country Head or Regional Ownership for a Product MNC’ came out as the most preferred leadership role by seasoned professionals.

In the same survey, when asked ‘how many people want a career shift – to move out from IIT?” 67% people answered ‘Yes’ and ‘Venture Industry’ was their first choice. He also touched upon the area of building ‘industry-academia’ ecosystem. According to him, there hasn’t been a significant movement in the direction except in ‘internships’ and ‘sponsored research’ areas.

The downturn in the US is contributing to the growth of the Indian Software Product industry – seasoned product-management and product-marketing professionals with global experience are returning to India.
