Interview with Kiran Datar (MD, Webex India) @ Product Conclave
Pradeep: According to you, why is SaaS a great opportunity for young Software Product companies?
Kiran: SaaS is a great opportunity for young software companies because it completely takes away one of the key hurdles to success of product companies which, is the sales and distribution of the software package. By enabling companies to focus on developing great technology that can be sold and distributed over the web to a global audience it greatly enhances the ability of these companies to quickly monetize their efforts. Thus, even young companies with relatively smaller budgets can hope to compete with larger companies if they have a great software product.
Pradeep: Can you throw some light on the opportunity of partnerships (among multiple SaaS vendors) for Indian Software Product companies?
Kiran: A number of older, larger SaaS companies are now beginning to develop and eco-system around the deployment of such software which includes marketing, sales and even provisioning. This provides a good opportunity for Indian Software Product companies to create SaaS based software and then partner with these larger established players to leverage their sales and distribution capabilities. In many cases this can be done on a revenue sharing basis so that the risks are largely mitigated.
Pradeep: What is your message to Indian entrepreneurs who are looking at creating global products?
Kiran: My message to Indian entrepreneurs would be that now is fantastic time to be an entrepreneur and that they should go ahead and take that risk to develop new ideas and bring them to the market. To build globally competitive products entrepreneurs must focus on innovation, scale and quality.
