Interview with Suresh Sambandam (Founder & CEO, OrangeScape) @ Product Conclave

Speaker InterviewPradeep: What are the key challenges you are facing in building a successful Software Product brand from India?
Suresh: I would attribute lack of Product Eco-system as the key challenge. As India is slowly progressing towards becoming a developed country, the economic conditions are improving and more youngsters are willing to take risks given the fact that there are quite a few people who DO NOT have to fight for bread and butter on daily basis! So, the count of the entrepreneurs is increasing, however, the lack of product eco-system and lack of prior success stories like YouTube, Flickr, etc is the big hurdle to convince the family & the society around them, that what they are attempting to do in-deed is a great thing than working for Infosys or TCS!

Pradeep: What is your message to the young entrepreneurs who are looking at venturing into Software Product space?
Suresh: As a general rule of thumb, young graduates should work for 1 – 3 yrs before starting out a venture. I am not talking about exceptional people like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates here. They don’t fit into any rule! While doing so, they need to pick a product company to work for. Preferably a startup! They need to understand the difference between skill vs discipline. For example, OOP is a discipline and C++ / Java is a programming language skill. Someone who knows the discipline could learn any tool easily. When actually starting out, it would be great if they can identify a founder as their mentor, who could be a executive or non-executive director in their board!

Pradeep: What kind of support would you like from successful Indian Software Product companies?
Suresh:
1.    As a CSR the top executives should at least commit 2% of time and 1% of the PAT to develop the product eco-system.
2.    Successful entrepreneurs should setup a Angel Funds and Seed Funds and actively promote the product eco-system.
