Putting Leadership before HR – The Mantra for Emerging Companies
Ganesh Chella, Founder & CEO, Totus Consulting and Co-founder, Executive & Business Coaching Foundation India Limited who presented his insights and experiences in a gathering with about 40 paying participants at the NASSCOM EMERGE forum in Chennai.
Summary is given below: About 40 participants gathered to hear about the exciting subject.
It was one of the finest treat for all those learning community which gathered at Hotel Savera that morning for a breakfast cum learning event.
Mr. Ganesh Chella created a flutter when he mentioned that this subject has nothing to do with HR professionals while it was all filled with active practicing HR professionals mainly. With that excitement and suspense thrown in, participants became extra curious to know what this is all about then. Very meticulously and softly, Mr. Chella did a great job of breaking the myth ruling in the IT industry about management, leadership, decision making, self-interest based shoddy work and actions, what to expect and what is beyond expectation etc….
- Problem of any co is not HR but leadership
- Smaller cos., may find promoters or top CxOs not revealing structures and institutionalizing issues and process for fear of losing control
- The way you do conversation reflects the way you receive the subject and respond
- Mentoring and coaching are two different subjects
- In SMEs, do not bring too many people together at the same time. Allow the organization to absorb. New people must respect older employees.
- Engagement happens when you give directions and leadership. Not pizzas and tambola as that trivializes
- Staffing left to recruiter is creating disaster
- Entrepreneurs prefer to keep the organization structure loose and vague
- Branding comes by top class one or two performers and not by ads
- People working close to founders gain that extra insight and perspective
And so on …..
The greatness about the presentation was that he was soft and fast so much so that people hardly noticed the serious statements and impacts hitting at so many of industry practices, common mistakes and strategic errors while still becoming stunned.
Speaker was candid enough to share as to how and why many owners and investors stopped inviting him to continue the consulting engagement when they were told that they have to change in their outlook as well as practice.
Indeed each and everyone enjoyed the presentation of Mr. Ganesh Challa.

It was a very heard hitting presentation with points which can easily shake any CXO– he exposed the stupidity going on SMEs
This is a long overdue thought. Leadership needs to own performance issues more intimately than it has done historically.
Graduating leagues as an entrepreneur can be challenging though and I have a few thoughts around that on http://www.talkingheadshr.com/talk

Indeed a nicely done presentation!
The stress given on differentiating HR practices from Leadership is of importance and makes an effective and important issue for Emerging Startups.
“Its about growing up, with a great team”
“Allow the SME to absorb” makes for a great cost effective business proposition, especially for the SME’s.
The Leadership has to be strong from the very initial stages for an emerging company. Right from the idea initiation to the building up of the organisation, an effective leadership makes the difference, between a successful and a lagging organisation.
Though for every entrepreneur, it would be great to have equally passionate people around to support, but seldom being the case, people need to be directed, which makes the role of a defined leader all the more essential.
Best Regards,
