An Idea can change the fortunes of your company
We are living in times where enterprises and entrepreneurs are made by the day, and so are the fate of companies. In our day and age, where information travels as fast as the speed of thought and the conventional boundaries of businesses do not exist, companies need to think differently to stay competitive. Constant innovation is the key to competitiveness and sustainable growth for any company, and such innovation can seed only from ideas.
Where do these ideas exist? Ideas can come from anywhere, but the question is “Are you tapping it?” Companies should tap into their internal and external ecosystem for ideas. Internally for instance, the organisation should encourage employees from the bottom up to share ideas, and ingrain that into the culture of the company.
The front-line force, or the customer service personnel are the ones that interact directly with the consumer, prospect and the market, and have a pulse on the ever changing market scenario. Pool in their ideas and you’ll get a clear perspective of the market, and what your end-consumer actually wants.
Freshers, management trainees or graduates fresh from school are also a great source for ideas, as their minds are brimming with fresh thoughts and concepts. Go a step further, don’t make coming up with ideas an option, but a part of the job profile and incentivise employees for them.
Toyota is the perfect example of a company that has stayed ahead of the curve, and is truly a company that thrives on innovation just by tapping into the wealth of ideas within. To give you a statistic, an average Toyota employee generates around 100 ideas a year!
For companies that have made ideas and innovation their mantra, tough times don’t necessary call for tougher measures, but smarter measures. And while others reel and collapse under the tempest of recession and downturn, these companies stay afloat and sail through.

I like the phrase “Tough times call for smart measures”. I think companies should realize the full potential of their own employees – right from programmers, analysts, admins & not just managers. It is indeed motivating for an employee ,who is at the lower end of the hierarchy doing his/her desk job , to be called for a brain storming session on how to market better or on what new features can be added to a product. And, you never know where your next new idea will spring from !
