The 52nd Friday’s 2.0 session with Mr. Subroto Bagchi at The NASSCOM HeadQuarters

LIVE blogging Mr. Subroto Bagchi, at The NASSCOM Friday’s 2.0 this is Mr. Bagchi’s second book launch at The NASSCOM HeadQuarters.

I am much glad to LIVE blog this session with Subroto, as I am a former MindTree Mind and having Subroto right in front of my eyes is just a great feeling!

So we have Mr. Bagchi starting with the talk now and am I excited?!

I never had a pre-concieved bunch of things to tell you

So we have an open session today, interestingly we have people talking about the idea of a professional, which is Subroto’s third book today which we are talking about in the session. When we talk about being professional it is not so much about entrepreneurship or the paid work that we do!

Interesting examples being quoted by Subroto, of Mr. Manmohan Singh at the G20 Summit and here we are looking further to the G8…the mark of a true entrepreneur, looking ahead! Will India be the next health care capital of the world, will depend on the increasing bunch of professionals that we create, and same is the case with the CA’s, Lawyers and the rest.

I am challenging the definition of professionalism today

Interestingly Subroto talks about the front page story in the papers today and yes he does make a point with the gathering.

We will have to learn, what does it take to be a professional in the Global Standards, if we need to take India to the next stage. There are certain set of qualities which are foundational qualities and then there are certain set of qualities which come over them. During your 30’s and 40’s you need to learn to deal with volumes, but as you go to the next higher level, you are no longer dealing with volumes, you are dealing with complexity!

At the drop of a hat, the whole world may change around you and the issue is how a CEO handles complexity

Subroto marks the point with an interesting example of Ramalinga Raju from Satyam. For the first time we have so many women coming into the workforce and hence I need to learn about the Gender issues, only then I would be a worldclass professional.

The foundational qualities of being a professional that I am putting ahead in this book are:

  1. A professional must be capable of working unsupervised
  2. You should be capable of certifying the completion of your own work

The fundamental issue is that the world is moving away from supervision, because more and more people are going to work with ideas!

When you work with ideas, only you know that you have done your best!

Each and every profession is becoming a performance. As knows a surgeon, only the doctor knows that he has done his work perfectly! Whatever you are doing, you are an expert and only you should know that this indeed is the best that could have been done.

Planned Abundanment – you must know that you have achieved 80%, you need to abunden

It is abundenment in a planned way such that you are no longer focused on that, the rest of the organization is focusing on that. You now go ahead and do the next thing. You have to do your best but that does not mean that you get trapped in your idea. Very interestingly, Subroto is putting entrepreneurs as examples and making the room understand about moving on! Let Go – how entrepreneurs need to learn the art, to scale up!

Let go of the desire to take control, the desire to feed your ego, the desire of being the hero in your company!

Creating an enterprise, a company at a certain level is a sexual act, you are pro-creating…there is no difference in having a baby than having a company!

When you have a baby, the thought is that of parenting and when the baby is born and you have a long view of time and you are enormously patient with the baby. When it comes to your child, you take a long view of time. this is the kind of mindset, required to build a company.

  1. When you have a long view of time, you are willing to submerge your ego
  2. You are willing to overlook the failures
  3. You will nutriate the organization

There cannot be any learning in the world without a sense of learning. You dont look for ROI from the baby. What is your baby – your biological legacy and what is your company? Your logical legacy! When you build a company it is about building inheritance.

If you look at the Fortune 500 list, most of them did not exist 25 years back!

At each stage of the company, there would be trade-offs in the short term and the long term, Subroto amazingly explains quoting examples of Infosys’, HCL’s of the world.

Build an organization on the strength of character and not on the strength of passion

Learn to forgive yourself. Entrepreneurs are very tough on themselves sometimes. The thing you need to do is de-toxify yourself and sometimes the way the way to do this is to consciously do something positive as a self driven person. But then again only you know what you have done how good/ bad it is.

Do a little more than necessary and then move on!

In the whole world nothing large happens without kind-ness and forgive-ness.

I feel its an obsolete idea for companies to think that rising a company is all about shrewd money making. In the future companies, there will be scope for kind-ness for all stakeholders and hence there will be a different kind of energy in the organization.

Mr. Murthy does this: every night he switches the lights off and looks at all that happened in the day and he thinks about all of it, and he says it is catharitic for him. It gives him the power to be what he really is. And Narayan said something amazing, beautiful when someone brought a visitor to the room when he realized that there were only 2 chairs in the room that he never realized that for 20 minutes the colleague was standing. And he said to himself how insensitive could I be. In that moment he is so full of himself, but the next time your antennae are up and you realize yourself!

Self Doubt is Good

You will have moments of self doubt and that is okay.

We all will have to take charge of our own education. The education system is in absolute state of dis-array but it is the tale of the dog, which is the society. Subroto fantastically answers with this, Ankur Lal’s question.

Seven Minutes! Subroto remarks to a question from the room, I love Subrotos’ time check!

Subroto recommends two books while talking about the current education system and the various forms of education:

  1. Multiple Intelligences
  2. Five Minds for the future

More and more CEO’s will have to deal with unscripted events and hence you will have to take decision on the spot. You will have to have intelligence not in the brain but in the wrists.

Subroto shares a touching example of 26/11 and how Taj and Oberoi’s reacted respectively to the event. I am as usual amazed by Subroto, I have known him since MindTree and it’s always infinite worth just being with him. For any entrepreneur, I will strongly suggest at least 30 minutes with Subroto and you would get all your energies in life back!

We end the session here with a hearty laugh when Subroto says, our generation today has become a tetra generation!

The solution is in creating a company on your own reflection than creating a nation of your reflection!

Subroto talks about what Success to him is on the last question by a young lad in the room:

  1. Its about building a legacy
  2. Success is about achieving extra-ordinary things with ordinary people

Subroto has charged the room with an energy which I have not seen before at any of the NASSCOM Friday’s 2.0 sessions before! And well here we go with another of the (last) questions, to which Subroto is giving one of the most intelligent and amazing answers I have heard from leaders, I have met. Building an emotional infrastructure is what Subroto is talking about.

Leaders dont understand the power of content
