EMERGE Insight Survey sheds light on impact of NASSCOM initiatives for emerging companies
The NASSCOM EMERGE Insight survey, conducted recently to ascertain impact of NASSCOM’s EMERGE initiatives, revealed that there was a significant level of awareness of NASSCOM activities for the emerging companies segment. The majority of the survey participants responded favorably to the various initiatives undertaken by NASSCOM. The survey further revealed that emerging companies face similar challenges such as lack of resources, especially skilled manpower and finances. Most of the respondents felt that NASSCOM could take further constructive steps that involved a more proactive role for the association.
Data Interpretation
The majority of the participants – 57.8% were existing members of NASSCOM. There was considerable awareness reported by 2/3rd of the respondents (66.7%) regarding the activities and initiatives undertaken by NASSCOM. The primary source of generating this awareness was attributed to mailer invites (39.9%) while 50% of the participants felt that the EMERGE blog/community and the NASSCOM website were key sources of information for its initiatives.
Majority of the participants felt that there were significant advantages enjoyed by emerging companies through these initiatives. It was universally acknowledged that the key benefit of these events was that they provided a platform and sounding board to hear others, and be heard. It enabled like minded and similar sized organizations to build their networks, create publicity, gain exposure and equally important – to showcase their products on a big scale. Around a quarter (23.7%) of the participants felt that synergy benefits through partnerships and providing a platform (22.4%) were important growth factors that NASSCOM could play a role in.
Initiatives Footprint
Popular events with high rate of participation included the EMERGE blog at the top of the list (14.2%) followed by the EMERGE community, newsletter, conclave and mentorship program. These events enabled mentorship, networking and allowed for an interactive, multiple flow of information from different channels that helped companies in keeping abreast with latest developments.
What more?
Many of the participants reported that to step-up its initiatives and make a better impact, NASSCOM would need to adopt a more proactive role that entailed being a liaison body between prospective clients, service providers, technology providers and the startup companies themselves. It was also felt that NASSCOM could scale up its communications programme by including coverage of emerging trends and increasing its information/knowledge sharing sessions, workshops, newsletters, etc while simultaneously expanding its programmes across the country and even take it to the global stage, in order to increase awareness of its initiatives. A key observation was that NASSCOM also needed to differentiate startups from product companies and design events according to respective needs and requirements.
Challenges for EMERGE members
Regarding major impediments to growth, it was universally reported that talent acquisition and employee retention was a significant challenge. Other responses included insufficient sources of funding, poor visibility/access to markets, and a dearth of opportunities for exports and increasing customer bases across industries.
Most of the participants felt that they could contribute to NASSCOM EMERGE initiatives by sharing their own experiences and knowledge. Several respondents expressed interest in contributing to the EMERGE blog, and in assisting NASSCOM to build a greater platform for partnerships and mentoring.
The positive impact of all that NASSCOM has done so far is mirrored in the fact that 50% of the non-members surveyed expressed interest in becoming members of NASSCOM, while 38.9% said that they would actively consider it in the future.
