Growing the SME Space

SMEs are defined in various ways in India, typically via amounts of capital invested. The RBI has defined Micro Enterprises as those with less than 10 to 25 lakhs (depending on whether the business is engaged in Services or in Manufacturing) in capital employed, Small Enterprises as those with not more than 2 to 5 Crore and Medium Enterprises as those with not more than 5 to 10 Crore in capital employed. Other countries use the number of employees and total revenue also as parameters for classification. Worldwide, it is estimated that 99.3% of all enterprises are small or medium in size.

Indian product start-ups have struggled to convert superior products to sales. Very few companies have crossed the chasm, and while their accomplishments are laudable in light of the challenges, the scale is abysmal. EMERGE Insight Survey sheds light on impact of NASSCOM initiatives for emerging companies

The NASSCOM EMERGE Insight survey, conducted recently to ascertain impact of NASSCOM’s EMERGE initiatives, revealed that there was a significant level of awareness of NASSCOM activities for the emerging companies segment. The majority of the survey participants responded favorably to the various initiatives undertaken by NASSCOM. The survey further revealed that emerging companies face similar challenges such as lack of resources, especially skilled manpower and finances. Most of the respondents felt that NASSCOM could take further constructive steps that involved a more proactive role for the association.

EMERGe Forum logoOne of the most important initiatives is the NASSCOM EMERGE forum, which was set up in  2005 with the objective to help young and emerging companies to grow and scale up to become medium and large companies.
