My NASSCOM Talk: Made in India, Made for the World

Yesterday, I gave a talk at the NASSCOM Emerge Friday 2.0 event about how the time is ripe for Indian startups to target the global market: ‘Made in India, Made for the World‘.

So far, Indian startups have focused on tweaks for the local market, not inventions or tweaks for the global market, partly because Indian VCs have tended to fund me-too startups with a business model focused on enabling transactions for the local market (book a air/ rail/ bus/ movie ticket).

Discover “The Professional” within you – An evening with Subroto Bagchi, MindTree

headerThe word Professional has many connotations. Instantaneously it conjures up images of nattily dressed doctors, engineers, MBAs and mostly of people who are self employed, having the ability to earn their livelihood through practise of their chosen craft. Over time, the word has become rather loosely coupled and we have to take adequate care, lest it becomes a clichéd variety. It is actually a very powerful idea – a way of life, only pursued by a certain type of people, who have a rather distinct mindset. As succinctly put by Mr Subroto Bagchi in his new book, the two rare qualities that a professional displays, are the ability to work unsupervised and the ability to certify the completion of one’s work. He does not need a boss who writes his appraisal, giving him constructive feedback for continuous improvement. In most work environments, people who produce anything of economic value usually need supervision. A person who needs supervision is no professional. He is an amateur, maybe even an apprentice.

The Mc-D model

I was browsing my favorite newspaper, “the Wall Street Journal” and I came across this piece of news which sort of stopped me for a moment – “Your Bad luck is a windfall for airlines” and what I gathered is that your ticket cancellation, preponement, postponement or any such arrangements yields airlines a whopping $2 billion a year, much more than what they earn for baggage services and a simple search shows that a typical airlines makes around $15 billion. So if you add all these ticket alteration revenues, baggage revenues and all other value added service revenues, I am sure will come to a huge % of the total revenues but still one perceives that airline makes most of its money via the ticket sales.
